Comment Tag
Overall the myth of the Comment Tag is one that still stays with us today. Oddly enough, search engine optimization firms, individual websites, companies and corporations still use comment tags in their code of optimization reasons.
The fact that comment tags are still in use represents the misunderstanding in the use of a comment tag to begin with. Browsers do not see comment tags, and the comment tag do not help with search engines! We recommend that you remove all comment tags in live code because a comment tag is not as effective as it once were.
Comment tags look like
<!-- this is a comment -->
<!-- and so is this one,
which occupies more than one line -->
You will notice that a comment tag is basically a left arrow, an exclamation point, two hyphens, a space, and then text, like this:
<!-- place comments here -->
It closes after the text with a space, two more hyphens and a right arrow.
Comment tags are treated as markup only and have no special meaning in the search engines. They are invisible to the user and can only be seen in the code itself. They are for the use of designers and programmers to make comments and remarks in the HTML for later navigation.
Comment tags for Search Engine Optimization
At one time in the latter part of the 90's, comment tags were mildly effective in the use of the search engine optimization. Some webmasters found the use of comment tags effective, and continual use of them resulted in increased rankings for some. Today, comment tags are part of Search Engine Optimization history.
