Keyword Optimization
Keyword optimization is the most important thing in achieving a top search engine placement. Keyword optimization is a discipline where you have to use the keywords from the keyword research throughout the text on your webpages.
Some people confuse keyword optimization with the META-keyword tag, but META-keyword tag does not count much in how well a webpage ranks, if you do not have relevant content.
In most cases a webpage will only rank well for a few keywords - the one that search engines determine to be the most important for that page.
If you run a pet shop, you cannot expect that you can do keyword optimization for the thousands of pet related keywords that people are using if you only optimize your front page. Instead, you have to optimize each of the webpages on your website that have content people are looking for - the keywords you have developed through your keyword research.
Search engines weigh keywords according to their placement on a webpage. There are some spots that are more important than others - places where you should always remember to use the most important keywords for each webpage.
Title Meta Tag
The title of your page is the single most important place to have your keywords.
Heading Tag
Headlines carry more weight than the rest of the text on your pages. This is because text found in headings usually identifies a particular theme or section of content.
Content Area
Most people forget that this is the most obvious place that a search engine looks for relevant content. You have to use the keywords in the main viewable text on your webpage. This is what the users will actually see, whether human or machine. If the keywords are not on the viewable page, then they should probably not be in any other area of the webpage.
Link Tag
The words that are hyperlinked on your webpages are sometimes weighed more heavily than the rest of the words in the main body text.
So if you want to rank well for "pet shop", you should use that phrase as a hyperlink somewhere on your page.
Description Meta Tag
The description meta tag is meant to describe what your page is about and must contain the popular search words from your keyword research. All pages should have an accurate description meta tag with relevant keywords within it.
HTML meta keyword
Many people incorrectly believe that a good html meta keyword tag is all that is needed to achieve good listings in the search engines, which is entirely incorrect. While meta keyword optimization is usually part of content optimization for search engines, it is not the be-all and end-all of optimizing your page.
ALT text
The ALT text is also called alternative text and is used to describe images. It is located in the html img tag. You can see the text when you move your mouse over an image on a webpage (that is, if they have added the ALT tag to the html img tag). Some search engines read and index the html img tag and alt text, but how much it improves web ranking varies from engine to engine.
Webpage URL
A general search engine optimization trick is to include the most important keywords in your webpage URL. Most of the benefit from keywords in URLs is not from any kind of extra weighing a search engine gives it but due to the way that people link to your webpage. In that way it can become one of the most important ways to increase website visitors.
Good Domain Names
Good domain names contain a keyword that gives high search engine ranking positioning. This is an old search engine optimization statement that it is still true!
