Website Importance

For the purpose of better search results, the concept of link popularity and website importance was developed. Following this concept, the number of inbound links for a document measures its website importance. Hence, a webpage is generally more important, if many other webpages link to it.

Google has developed an advanced link popularity algorithm that takes into account the link popularity of the linking pages, called Google PageRank. In practice, Google's PageRank is probably the best way to check a website importance.

Alexa Ranking is another well-known company that ranks webpages using data from their toolbar.

Google PageRank

Google PageRank is Google's way of deciding a webpage importance. It matters because it is one of the factors that determine a page ranking in the search results. It is not the only factor that Google uses to rank pages, but it is an important one.

Google PageRank is a numeric value (0 - 10) that represents how important a page is on the web.

Google figures that when one page links to another page, it is effectively distributing votes for the other page. The more votes that are distributed to a page, the more important the page must be.

Also, the importance of the page that is distributing the vote determines how important the vote itself is. Google calculates a page's importance from the votes. How important each vote is taken into account when a page's PageRank is calculated.

From a web promotion point of view, there are two ways in which PageRank can affect the position of your page: The number of inbound links and the number of outbound links from pages linking to your page. If there are two pages of equal PageRank linking to you, one with 5 outgoing links and the other with 10, you will get twice the PageRank distribution from the page with only 5 outgoing links.

PageRank PageRank is one of the methods Google uses to determine a page's relevance or importance. In short PageRank is a "vote", by all the other pages on the Web, about how important a page is. A link to a page counts as a vote of support.

PageRank Distribution How much a link to your site will increase your Google PageRank.

Alexa Ranking

Alexa is a company owned by Amazon.com. The ranking is from the number one site (ranking one) to as many sites as there are. The lower the Alexa ranking number the more heavily visited the site.

What is interesting and advantageous in looking at Alexa rankings is that Alexa rates a site for the traffic which has visited over a period of months. This gives a stable realistic view of a site measure of traffic and how it ranks compared to other sites.

But it is not perfect. Alexa only calculates for websites in their database because in order to get counted a site has to be visited by someone with a toolbar installed. And everyone doesn't have a toolbar installed. So there may be a site visited every day by thousands of people not in Alexa rankings.
